| For several years the fishermen of the West Indies have directed their activities towards new fishing grounds, notably the bathyales zones adjacent to island plateaux up to approximately 1000 metres in depth. Explorations earned out since 1989 have shown that diverse crustacean populations could be exploited. However, populations and exploitable stocks arc not well known. The use of crustaceans traps as a fishing technique permits the capture of shellfish, shrimps and prawns of which at least six species could have commercial interest. | Over the last decades, the fishing effort focused on crustaceans and especially on the lobster has continued to increase. This way, the number of pots used by each boat has grown from a few dozen to several hundred. This process lead to an overexploitation of the seabed and the catches do not go over 400 tonnes/years despite the increase of the means involved. Consequently, it has been necessary to implement a number of new measures to protect the lobster stock, and some restricted areas have been created off the French coasts. |

| Fishing and trade of living crustaceans are dynamic commercial sectors in France. 25 000 tons of local or imported crabs, lobsters , crawsfishes are yearly treated. Based upon a literature review and fishmongers interviews, this study describes the current pratices and problems associated to live crabs and lobsters storage. Supply conditions of live crustaceans, marketing networks, and biological, ecological and physiological characteristics of crustaceans were discussed. Morever, storage facilities, their operating rules and factors affecting the survival rate under storage and transportation conditions were reviewed. |

| Tetrachloroethylene, a chlorinated solvent, is detected in the plume of East-Toulon domestic wastes treatment plant. Its subletal toxicity was tested du ring 31 days in a flow-through system at Pen Bron aquaculture centre, using swampshrimp Palaemonetes varians as test organism. Under expérimental conditions : natural variations in temperature and salinity , normal pH, ammonia and dissolved oxyg~n values, running tetrachloroethylene concentrations (10, 100 and 500 µg.l-1) induced neither mortalities nor any change in molting frequencies of experirnented animaIs.
